Sofia by season
Spring (May–June) — the sweet spot
May and June are arguably Sofia's best months. Temperatures are warm and pleasant (21–26°C), the city's parks and Vitosha foothills are green and inviting, and you'll share the streets with far fewer tourists than in peak July–August. The Seven Rila Lakes hiking season opens in June, giving you access to one of Bulgaria's most spectacular natural attractions. Prices are in the shoulder zone — typically 20–30% cheaper than peak summer. May is our top overall recommendation.
Summer (July–August) — hot and busy
July and August are hot (27–29°C), sunny and peak season for Sofia tourism. Day trips to the Seven Rila Lakes are at their most popular — arrive early or book a morning tour to beat crowds at the chairlift. The city itself is lively with outdoor concerts and festivals; the mountains offer welcome respite from urban heat. Expect peak prices and hotel occupancy. Still excellent — just book ahead.
Autumn (September–October) — ideal for hiking
September rivals May as Sofia's finest month. The heat relents (24°C), the Seven Rila Lakes are still accessible (season closes October), Vitosha's forests turn amber and gold, and autumn harvests bring excellent local wine and food. Crowds thin out noticeably from mid-September. October is spectacular for foliage walks on Vitosha and the Plovdiv old town, and prices drop back to shoulder levels. A strong contender for the year's best hiking conditions.
Ski season (December–March) — Borovets and Bansko
Bulgaria punches well above its weight for skiing. Borovets (90 km, 1.5h from Sofia) is the easiest day-trip ski resort — 58 km of runs, beginner-friendly, popular with locals and families. Bansko (144 km, 2h) is Bulgaria's premier ski resort — 75 km of slopes, modern lifts, a lively resort town and reliable snowmaking December to April. Both are dramatically cheaper than Alpine alternatives. Ski season runs December to March, peaking in January–February.
Winter city break (December–February)
Non-skiers will find Sofia quiet and affordable December through February. Christmas markets add festive warmth; the city's museums (National History Museum, Boyana Church, Archaeological Museum) make for excellent cold-weather days. Hotel prices are at their annual low. The city centre is walkable even in winter, and the metro keeps things convenient. Pack a proper coat — temperatures dip to -3 to -5°C, occasionally colder.
Spring shoulder (March–April) — Baba Marta and blossoms
Baba Marta Day (1 March) is a uniquely Bulgarian celebration — locals exchange red-and-white martenitsa bracelets to mark the start of spring. It's a charming time to be in Sofia. April warms noticeably (16°C), and the ski resorts are still running while the city is starting to blossom. A solid choice for budget-conscious travelers who don't mind variable weather.
