About Sofia Escape
Sofia Escape is an independent travel guide to Sofia, Bulgaria and the surrounding region. Our goal is simple: help you plan a genuinely good trip — with honest information, real logistics, and none of the fluff that fills most travel sites.
Why Sofia?
Sofia is one of Europe's most underrated capitals. Orthodox domes, layers of Byzantine, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet history, a mountain you can hike within 30 minutes of the city centre, and some of the most affordable prices of any EU capital. Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area in January 2025 and adopted the euro in January 2026 — two milestones that make it easier than ever to visit, yet it remains well off the radar for most travellers.
We think that's changing — and we want to be the most useful English-language (and French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and Polish) resource when it does. Our coverage goes well beyond the city: Rila Monastery, the Seven Rila Lakes, Plovdiv's old town, Koprivshtitsa's Bulgarian National Revival villages, and the medieval walls of Veliko Tarnovo are treated as first-class destinations with real transport details and honest logistics, not afterthoughts.
Our approach
We research every guide thoroughly and update it when conditions change. That means:
- Real prices in euros — Bulgaria adopted the euro in January 2026, and we give you actual meal, coffee, taxi and museum costs, not vague "budget/mid-range/luxury" tiers.
- Honest tourist-trap warnings — overcharging taxis at Sofia Airport, aggressive bar bills, ATM scams near tourist sites. We name them.
- Transport logistics that actually work — metro and bus times, which tour operators are worth booking, how to reach Rila Monastery without a car, and what a self-drive day trip to Plovdiv actually involves.
- Communist and Bulgarian Revival history treated with depth and sensitivity — the Museum of Socialist Art, the demolished mausoleum, Koprivshtitsa's April Uprising story — not as clickbait but as context that makes the country make sense.
How we make money
Sofia Escape is free to use. We earn affiliate commissions when you book tours or activities through our links to GetYourGuide and Viator (a Tripadvisor company). This costs you nothing extra — the commission comes from the platform, not from your booking price.
We do not accept paid placements, sponsored reviews, or any payment to feature a specific operator. What we recommend is what we genuinely think is worth your time and money. Read our full affiliate disclosure for details.
