Packing tips for Sofia
Sofia has a classic continental climate with four distinct seasons, so your packing changes dramatically by time of year. The one constant is comfortable walking shoes with good grip: the cobblestoned streets around the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Boyana Church neighbourhood are beautiful but uneven.
If you're heading to Rila Monastery or the Seven Rila Lakes, layer up even in summer — mountain weather above 2,000 m can turn quickly, and temperatures at the lakes can be 10°C cooler than Sofia city. Proper trail shoes (not sandals) are essential for the Seven Lakes hike.
When visiting Orthodox monasteries and churches (Rila Monastery, Boyana Church), shoulders and knees must be covered. Many sites provide wraps at the entrance, but carrying a light scarf or sarong is a good habit.
Bulgaria uses the Cyrillic alphabet — maps and offline navigation (Google Maps or Maps.me downloaded before you go) are invaluable outside the city centre. In Sofia itself, most tourist signage includes English.
Bulgaria joined the eurozone on 1 January 2026, so euros are now the currency. Card payments are widely accepted in Sofia; keep some cash for markets, rural cafés and monastery entrance fees.
